Evidently there was a strong Pizza making theme with the crew of the Motel -- and many of them worked late at their job making/delivering Pizzas. Well, where do you hang out after work...when after work means after midnight usually? The answer: Denny's! No ID's, no 2 drink minimum, and almost no drunks hitting on you! And what made Denny's better was that we had a custom waiter that was always there....MIKEY! He was a great waiter. He took care of us, even if all we did was come in and order 5 coffee's and a coke. The occasional sugar packet fight didn't seem to bother him at all. Probably because he new we would clean up the mess.
We met many members of the Motel West at Denny's. That was the neutral location that we always chose to have people meet us F2F (Face to Face). Some people jumped in and said hello...and I'm sure some people walked in...saw us...and ordered a coffee to go. Oh well, their loss. Denny's became the virtual extension of the BBS -- or I guess it would be better to say that the Motel West became the virtual extension of the nights of coffee at Denny's. What happened at Denny's usually appeared on the BBS later...and things that happened on the BBS were usually argued in detail at Denny's.
Could it have been Village Inn, or someplace else? Possibly...but Village Inn didn't have Mikey. And visits to Denny's when Mikey wasn't there were not always the best. Some waitresses did not quite understand our group...and were a little hesitant. But hey, who wouldn't be with our group... So here's to Denny's the virtual next door neighboor to the Motel West.

Mikey really was something else, I think he was the only person in town who would put up with us.
I remember going to a different Denny's once and before we could sit down we were informed that we'd be charged a quarter for every sugar packet thrown. They obviously remembered us.
Those despots! Oh well, we were an unusual lot. I think Mr. Coffee had us go to a Belgian Waffle house once. Not quite as fun -- no Mikey.
I remember sitting there at Denny's and switching all of Max's cigarettes in his box so that they were in upside down (I know, I know, it must have been low blood sugar waiting for my coke). I don't think he noticed until he smelled filter burning...
One habit I picked up at Denny's which has been real hard to shake was our habit of cheering whenever dishes were broken.
Many a time we'd hear the crash of dishes breaking, a spontaneous cheer would break out from our table. The offending employee would usually come out of the kitchen to give us the finger.
To this day if I hear dishes being broken in a restaurant I have to stop myself from cheering.
It's a good thing that didn't happen at Tempenyaki... I think that waiter would have skewered us with a flying knife...or shrimp.
Talking about off-beat behavior I recieved a letter from Frankie the Z today asking what we should do for April 1st.
You might want to keep your children in the house that day.
He's already suggesting resurrecting the MWNS...
When teens do this, authorities harrumph and look the other way. When middle age adults do this, authorities tend to press charges. (And you get your 15 seconds of fame on your local Fox station news broadcast...)
You are correct things have changed! I remember the MWNS creating chaos on a school bus as children rushed the back of the bus for a look.
These days I think the children would run in the other direction.
Unfortunately only some would. The rest would pull out cellphones and the whole adventure would be on YouTube.
The next day at work, a co-worker would come to you, "...you know I saw the strangest thing on youtube last night..."
Wow!!! If you haven't noticed, Your Conscience has showed up on one of our favorite blogs.
I'm not worried about 'you tube', who knows what headlines our reassembled group is capable of!
Wow, now we are up to S'car, Sir Duke, Your Conscience, Frank Zelba, White Lioness, and Midnight Cavalier. This is almost the whole "coffee" old crew... Impressive!
